Looking for something totally different then what you are used to playing, but want something with that old retro feel to it? Unbox Newbies Adventure is what you are looking for. It has that old school 3D Platformer feel, but an adventure like you have never seen before. I always read reviews of other people before I do my own to get a feel for what people are saying, before I express my own opinion. Most the time I somewhat agree, but on this one I really feel it isn't getting it's due. I hear things about clunky controls. You are a box that is the whole point, it isn't easy to manipulate your character on purpose. That is a whole point of the challenge you to get to where you need to get with the awkward movements a rolling box would have.
You play as Newbie a box from the GPS delivery service. You were made to deliver yourself to destinations, because with human employees a lot of the packages were coming up missing, so it was cheaper and more effective to make self delivering packages. You have all this evil packages as well trying to stop you from getting to your destination. The whole concept is super original, and hysterical to me. I loved my time with the game. It left me wishing there was more levels. There are three open worlds, that let you discover hidden items, and your missions on your own. They are all beautifully designed, and well laid out to make a fun adventure, and make looking for the hidden items more fun. You have a snow level, and a Island both look great, and are a blast to spend time on. You meet a ton of other cool characters that send you on missions and give you add-ons to your appearance. That is another cool thing is the customization of Newbie. He gets so many outfits to add to his box from hats to scarves no newbie will look the same.
To me Unbox Newbies Adventure took me back to a different time in gaming, all while delivering the beautiful appearance of more modern titles. This is one of those under-rated games of its time like Genie Shantae's Adventures. I recommend checking out her games as well. When your done with Unbox story mode the game delivers five incredible multiplayer modes as well.
1. Delivery: Which is pretty much a racing game. You have to get to a location before the other players The maps are laid out to be very challenging.
2. Oddbox: Which is really hard to explain. Best I could say is everyone is trying to chase down the oddbox, because who ever is it at the end wins the game.
3. Thief: You and your friends race to collect coins on the level, you shoot fireworks that stops them and makes their coins fly loose to where you can collect them. Who ever has the most at the end wins.
4. Collect: Collect is where Tape is hidden all over the map in random locations, and who ever collects the most at the end wins. You can make it a clean race, or make things a little dirty it is all up to you, and your friends.
5. Boxing Mode: This mode you all get fireworks, and the objective is to shoot your friends making them go into the water. You know because know one wants a wet package delivered. It is a lot of fun, has a FPS feel to it, and my favorite of the modes.
So 5 multiplayer modes, what other indie platformer delivers quantity like this? Unbox Newbies Adventure in my opinion is just a hidden, and under rated gem. One which a lot more people should be playing. I'm hoping to get my hands on a Signature series copy myself. That edition looks amazing.
Pros: Tons of Modes
Fun Customization
Original concept and Story
Hilarious characters
Delightful music
Enjoyable Challenge
Cons: A little short, would have loved another couple areas.
Overall 9.0 Unbox Newbies Adventure is a game people should be talking about, but they aren't. So that means they are missing out, and I hate when people miss out on great games.Prospect games really took the things you loved from 3D adventures from your childhood, and brought them into the now. Do yourself a favor, don't miss out on playing this one.
