At first impression "Whipseey and the Lost Atlas" looks just like a Kirby clone, but as you play you realize it's so much more. To be honest I actually enjoyed it almost as much as Kirby on the NES. You play as Alex a curious kid that gets himself in trouble and transformed into a adorable little character called Whipseey. He has to journey across five different areas to find the Lost Atlas to turn himself back to normal, and get back to his own world.
The areas are just so bright and colorful. I love just how clean, and cute the areas look. The enemies and bosses are really very retro , and just adorable. Don't fall into that cuteness to much though because they can be very very difficult. The levels are just designed to screw you over at times as well. There is like knock back when you get hit so it's set up a lot of the time to make you fall off the platforms and die. It can be really frustrating. The main frustration is no matter how far you get into area even the boss you die you have to play the whole thing over. That sucks because the bosses can take a lot of trial and error to learn the patterns. Even though I love that, i think it makes the game not kid friendly. There isn't difficulty modes, and I think that would be a welcome setting so people of all ages and gamer experience can enjoy. I really think the reason for this is the game is super short. So the difficulty spike makes it seem longer. I've noticed a lot of people doing this, and I'm not a fan of that way of designing. I think it is the one thing that kept this from being a perfect ten. I could have handed this game a ten without thinking twice about it, if there was just more to it. You can beat it in a hour if you know what your doing. I really hope to see more added to this game, i feel it could be a huge hit if just had more content.
It really is a wonderful retro like experience. That was really my only issue with it, except maybe for some hit detection at times. It plays smooth and the controls are spot on. The music is just delightful like the characters. I had such a great time with this, but then it was over so soon. I got a little replay out of it, because some of the Achievements will require you to play levels over more than likely. I know I will be coming back to this over and over though, because it is just so much quality development and a ton of fun. I really hope to hear more from this developer and this game. I hope people check it out, because in my opinion it really is a must play for retro fans. Some of it may feel unoriginal at times, like pulled from other games, but its games that are long gone and people this generation deserve to experience quality just like those retro games before it. So if your looking for some retro fun with a modern twist certainly don't miss out on this one. It's with out question worth your time, and money.
Pros: Beautifully designed colorful worlds and characters
Adorable enemies and cool boss battles
Feels really retro, and plays really well
The music is just so delightful and fun
Cons: Hit detection some times is a issue
Really Really short, hope they add to this its worth doing
Overall: 9.2 Retro feel with a modern twist, a game you really should have in your collection if you grew up playing the NES and SNES. The game needs more content, and the only thing keeping it from being a perfect score, but still well worth adding to your game library.
