Doing reviews sometimes starts to feel a little stale. So many games just feel the same, and leave me feeling like a broken record. Saying the same things over and over. I'll honestly say at times it becomes dreadful, I'll have a bunch of games piled up to review, and feel like I'm never gonna get done. Then out of no where a game comes along that just reminds me why I game, and how much fun games can be. OceanHorn is that game. If you buy just one Indie/Arcade game this year we review, let it be this one.
Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas to me seems to be inspired by the Zelda series, but I can't say that for sure because I'm not the developer, and I haven't actually asked them that. It does very much have the feel though. The game really makes me feel the magic I felt playing the Wind Waker.
Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas is about a young boy, they just call him kid. Would really loved to had a name though, because it is a hero and game that left a serious impression on me. Liked to had a name to go with the wonderful character, but it starts with his father's disappearance, He has gone off on an adventure, to fight some mysterious threat. So your guidance will begin with a local hermit, that will tell you all you need to know about the land you are in, and how to begin your journey. So you journey off with shield and sword in hand. Very Zelda like you will receive bombs as well later on that blast rocks, boxes, and other things opening secret areas as well as items. Also Zelda like you can smash vases, and cut down grass to find items along the way to. You also have a gun, but that is only while traveling between islands on your boat. You shoot enemies and mines that block your way in the ocean. Also can get some spells along the way, and even some abilities. It is just a delight from start to finish.
Awesome story, characters, the art design is just beautiful. It is full of color. The music is whimsical, but at times repetitive. The sites and sounds just take you back to those classic games, but still feel very current , and fun. It just lets you feel the nostalgia, without the letdowns you experience when going back to some of the older games that weren't quite as good as you remember upon returning to them. I enjoyed the experience from start to finish. Some things maybe could been a little better, like the combat system. have to remember the games origins though. It began as a mobile game, that being said it still isn't a negative that even hurts the score of this game one bit. The combat still works, and its still fun hacking and slashing enemies all the way through.
Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas is without a doubt one of the best arcade adventure games of the year. An instant Indie/Arcade classic in my opinion. I would put this right along side other amazing arcade marketplace games like Castle Crashers, Shadow Complex, Brothers:A Tale Of Two Sons, Limbo, and Braid. I am quite sure you will enjoy this game if that is the type of games your into. I'm really sure at the end of the year when we do our games of the year posts, this game will be right there in the mix.
Pros: Beautiful Design, So Colorful
Soundtrack and Sounds delightful
Story and characters hold your interest
Effective homage to classic genre
Smooth, Flawless Game play no Glitches
Cons: Combat System
Navigation at times, can be an issue
Overall: 9.6 An instant Arcade Adventure classic, that deserves to be played by every fan of Arcade and Retro games.
