Super Mutant Alien Assault is a very retro 16 bit feeling alien shooter that takes me back to the days of Xenophobe. It has that same classic feel to it. The amazing part about it is the random generated levels, making sure every time you load it up you load it up, you'll experience a different game. Even enemies change through out especially considering they are unlockables just like the weapons and characters you play with. The weapons can be picked up in vending type machines, the same with the explosives. The power ups can be found in wooden crates you must destroy. You can be left without a weapon, if you run out of ammunition on the other side of the ship away from the vending machines, so have to add that into your game plan as well. Or at least until you unlock your sidearm.
You play as a security droid aboard a ship after a alien invasion. Your duty is to clear freighters to prevent aliens from completion of their mission. I won't spoil it by telling you what they are trying to do, you'll have to find out for your self. Each Galaxy has four ships, in the fourth you battle a boss to be transported to the next one. There are three Galaxy in all so it is like 12 levels. Each ship is made up of a single screen. sounds like you would blow right through it I know, but each ship is quite challenging. It will take you some time to learn how every enemy, power up, and weapon works to the point where you can complete all three in one life, and that is what you must do to unlock the next difficulty. Your health is made up of 5 hearts every time your hit, or you hit yourself with an explosive you lose half of one, so you have to worry how you aim those rockets or grenades as well. So with that, and learning to jump around with a ship flooded with different types of enemies it is going to take a lot of practice to master this one. Good thing is the controls are excellent, so don't have to worry about glitches or mistakes killing you, unless they are your own mistakes.
With the almost never ending weapons, and unlockables Super Mutant Alien Assault is sure to keep you busy for some time. And even better you can play with a friend. The sad thing only if they are sharing a couch with you. No Xbox Live online yet. Kind of a trend in these indie games though considering their budgets, and really understandable. The game has really colorful and bright 2D style to it, and the music is really upbeat. It is Dubstep that fits the game really well. Had a really good time with the game, it's inexpensive, and is really simple straight forward in its overall objective.
